Project Details
Western University’s Materials Science Addition (MSA) team was looking to add new and sleek offices and a meeting room to their existing space to help facilitate collaboration and innovation. They wanted natural light to continue to flow through their space, to work around existing casework and cabinetry, and perhaps most importantly, to minimize disruption to students and staff.

Goals & Outcomes
Prefabricated Construction Delivers Bright, Functional Higher Education Space
Using our industry-leading ICE software, we were able to take this team (and the other experts involved, like electricians and general contractors) on a virtual tour of their new space before materials were ordered to ensure every detail was considered and the scope of work was clear. The client was able to make changes on the spot before construction started, meaning materials were ordered with enhanced precision and installation was more timely than with a traditional construction approach. This collaborative process and incorporation of technology was foundational to the project’s success.
Project Partners
This project was made possible with the support of a comprehensive team, including:
- Solutions Partner: DIRTT
- Designer: Western University Facilities Department
- Glass Supplier: BG Glass
- General Contractor: Graceview Enterprises Inc.
Notable Features
Glass walls with mitred corners
The space features several glass walls, installed with mitered glass corners, and at unique angles made possible through our industry-leading technology (available thanks to DIRTT). They ultimately enhance the space’s aesthetic and allow for ample natural light.
Scribable, chroma-coated tiles
The tiles within this space were preserved to enhance the overall aesthetic, and didn’t need to be cut to fit around the cabinetry, casework or walls. This means they’re undisturbed and well-positioned for future changes and reconfigurations.
Anodized aluminum frames
Providing a contemporary look and feel, these frames are also easily recyclable at the end of their lifespan, helping reduce the environmental impact of the overall project.
The Transformation
A Modern Space Equipped for Collaboration
The end result is a modern, bright, flexible space equipped for day-to-day functionality - including meetings, collaboration and idea-sharing. As a result of our collaborative effort, transparent process and technology, materials were ordered and installed in a matter of weeks, and the space is future-ready to evolve along with the MSA team.
